OUR STORY-

It Started With a Meeting Over Chai.

Mahita is a non-profit social development organization established in 1994, working across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh to empower marginalized communities, particularly women, children, and youth. Guided by a vision of a just and equitable society that values local cultures and community leadership, Mahita promotes dignity, opportunity, and sustainable development through holistic interventions.

Over the past three decades, Mahita has implemented programs focused on education, gender equality, child rights, livelihoods, health, humanitarian support, and community development. Beginning its journey in the urban slums of Hyderabad, the organization has expanded its reach to hundreds of rural villages and underserved communities, creating lasting social impact through grassroots action and community participation.

Mahita’s work has helped thousands of children access formal education, prevented child marriages, strengthened child protection systems, and improved school infrastructure through the provision of safe drinking water, sanitation facilities, STEM laboratories, and digital learning resources. The organization also supports adolescent girls through scholarships, menstrual health awareness, and leadership development initiatives.

Recognizing the importance of economic empowerment, Mahita equips young people with future-ready skills and connects them to employment opportunities, transforming lives and improving family incomes. The organization also works with farmers and rural communities through climate-resilient agriculture initiatives, including borewell recharge, irrigation restoration, soil conservation, and organic farming training.

Today, Mahita continues to build stronger, more resilient communities by advancing education, protecting rights, strengthening livelihoods, and creating opportunities for sustainable and inclusive development.
