Welcome to MAHITA
MAHITA is a non-profit social development organization working in the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh in Southern India. The organization was established in 1994 to initiate development interventions in the urban slums of Hyderabad. Since then, it has developed expertise in a wide range of development initiatives acquired through 29 years of devoted work and professionalism.
It has broad geographical coverage of 82 urban slums of Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Nalgonda, and Adilabad districts. Since its inception, the organization has adopted the rights based approach for working towards a socially just and empowered society, reflecting local cultural values and practices.

Since its inception in 1994, Mahita has been a beacon of hope and transformation for marginalized communities across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Our journey is a testament to the power of grassroots mobilization and community-driven change.
1994
Foundation & Grassroots Mobilization
Mahita was established in Hyderabad to empower marginalized women and children through community organizing. Early work focused on women’s collectives and grassroots leadership in rural Telangana.
2005
Expansion & Child Labour Elimination
Expanded into rural districts and urban slums, leading large-scale child labour mainstreaming initiatives.
80,000 children rescued and 230 villages declared child labour-free.
2010
Policy Advocacy & Systems Strengthening
Expanded into state-level child rights advocacy, influencing policy frameworks and coordinating a network of 120+ civil society organizations across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
